LETTER TO THE MEMBERSHIP - 5/6/2007

District Vocational Service Report

Rtn Jon Lovgreen is stepping down as Chairman at the end of this Rotary year for personal and professional reasons. Fortunately he will be remaining on the committee, undertaking a mentoring role with the ongoing Prison Project.  He has been replaced by Rtn Ged Heatherington, who has appreciated Jons’ guidance and assistance during the transition period.

The committee will be focusing on giving continued support and development to current projects. The Prison Project with Buckley Hall is requiring patience and perseverance from the volunteer Rotarians involved. They have undertaken training and have attended meetings and familiarisation visits.  However at the present time they are unable to be utilised. Progress is slow but our liaison Rotarian, Dean Sheriff, remains confident and determined that we should make a success of what could be a flagship project .

The Excitement of Science ’ is being discussed as an event that the committee hopes to continue both at District level and also by taking part in the national event at the Royal Institute in June 2008. Jon Lovgreen has submitted an article to the District magazine.

Shakespeare Competition’ or ‘ From Bard to Verse ‘ – is based on competition run by the Colombo North Club in Sri Lanka. A small team lead by DGN Elizabeth Tatman are undertaking to prepare a District competition to be in place for spring/summer term 2008.

Jon Lovgreen and the Ramsbottom club are looking at the possibility of hosting a ‘ District Technology Competition ’ for interested clubs and schools next year.

The Val Scerri Award is being encouraged as an opportunity to recognise the efforts of vocational projects being undertaken within our District. Details of how to apply are available on the District web-site.

Vocational Service District meetings are open to ALL Rotarians and attendance is to be promoted, particularly by Assistant Governors and incoming Presidents . By improving communication of the vocational work being undertaken by clubs and reporting back good practice, we hope to stimulate District 1280 Rotarians into continuing their work good work in the Second Avenue of Service.
The first meeting for the Rotary year 2007 –2008 is at St John’s Church, Manchester Road, Heywood on 4th July @ 7.30pm.

Yours In Rotary
