Sheila
was brought up and educated in Leigh, attending St Peter’s
Church of England school until the age of eleven years
and then went on to Manchester Road School for Girls
in Astley. Sheila then went on to complete her studies
by spending a year at Leigh College where she took a
course on double entry book-keeping. This enabled her
to get her first job with a local laundry and dry cleaning
company as a ledger clerk.
Sheila began married life in 1958 and her first son
was duly born in 1959 from which time she became a full-time
housewife and mother. Two more children followed, a son
in 1962 and a daughter in 1964. Sheila is now delighted
to say that she has nine grandchildren ranging in age
from seventeen to twenty-five years. Sheila and David
are very proud to say that they are all happy and successful
in their chosen careers.
Much later, in 1982, when the family had all flown the
nest, Sheila opened a nursery shop in Horwich, which,
with the help of her daughter Karen, she ran very successfully
for many years. In this same year, Sheila was also to
embark on another career, that of becoming a member of
Inner Wheel. It was not long before she became involved
in the work of the Horwich club and has held several
jobs including Club Correspondent, Overseas Service Organiser
and also President
During these years, Sheila also taught in Sunday School,
a job she thoroughly enjoyed and found very rewarding.
In the year 2000, Sheila retired from the nursery shop
and finding too much time on her hands went to work part-time
for a domestic lighting company. When this company went
into receivership in 2002, Sheila decided to buy the
company and, along with her daughter, is still working
in the business.
Sheila is very fond of reading and embroidery and, along
with her husband David, enjoys cooking and entertaining
friends. Together they enjoy their caravan in the Lake
District where they spend many weekends walking around
the lakes.
Over the years Sheila has devoted much time to Inner
Wheel and is particularly fond of conferences. She has
in fact only missed two national conferences in the last
twenty years and has attended conventions in Holland,
Australia and New Zealand.
It was during her three years as Overseas Chairman at
club level that Sheila was asked to become a Zone Leader.
This lead to her becoming District Overseas Chairman
and after enjoying the six years working with the district
committee was persuaded to let her name go forward as
2nd Vice Chairman. |
