Funding The Rotary Foundation

Overview

All Rotarians are asked to support the work of their own charity, The Rotary Foundation, with donations to either the Annual Programmes Fund or gifts to the Permanent Fund.

Funding the Annual Programmes Fund

Foundataion Programmes FundThe Rotary Foundation's Annual Programmes Fund (APF) finances the work of clubs on a year-by-year basis. Donations to the APF are invested for 3 years (to pay for the running costs of The Rotary Foundation) and then split equally between the Districts and the World Fund. The funds that come back to District are known as District Designated Funds (DDF) since it is each District that will designate how their share will be spent. The World Fund supports, among other programmes, Group Study Exchange, Matching Grants, Volunteer Service Grants; etc.
As part of the “Every Rotarian Every Year” initiative each club is asked to make donations equivalent to, at least, US$100 per member. That has to be a personal decision by each Rotarian and is not a mandatory contribution requirement. All the District Foundation Committee asks is that every Rotarian in the District makes an individual contribution of any amount.  Personal donations to the APF can also be made and all donations whether personal or by a club count towards Paul Harris Fellow recognition points. Rotary International publishes an informative newsletter each quarter that contains useful information about this ongoing initiative. Current and back issues can be viewed and down loaded from the EREY pages on the RI website by clicking here.

In addition to any fund raising events that clubs undertake on behalf of the APF themselves, the District Rotary Foundation Committee also suggests a number of opportunities for clubs to participate in.

  • Ink Jet & Toner Cartridge Recycling Scheme
  • Mobile Phone Recycling
  • Shopping via the Internet
  • Sale of Christmas Puddings
  • Foreign Currency Collections are now being considered

Shopping on the Internet

A wide variety of goods and services can be acquired via the links on the RIBI website.  Each vendor has agreed to donate either a fixed amount or a % of the purchase price to The Rotary Foundation.

Gifts to the Permanent Fund

Typically it is personal gifts of US $1,000 or more that go to the Permanent Fund.

Rotary Foundation Permanent FundThe Permanent Fund ensures The Rotary Foundation's ability to meet the urgent needs of the future through an endowment. An endowed contribution is a gift that the Foundation holds in perpetuity. The gift is invested, and only a portion of its investment return is used for purposes specified by the donor. To guard against inflation, the remaining investment return is added to the principal. The goal is to ensure that the principal maintains its real value over time. Thus, gifts to the Permanent Fund will grow and continue to support The Rotary Foundation for years to come.

There are several ways in which the gifts can be made:

  • Outright gifts of US $1,000 or more to the Permananet Fund will result in the donor being recognised as a Benefactor of The Rotary Foundation. Similarly, notifying The Rotary Foundation that a future commitment (bequest) has been made in a Will, will also result in the same recognition.
Additional information and details of the form the recognition takes can be viewed on the RI website by clicking here.
  • Bequests of US $10,000 or more that are notified to The Rotary Foundation are recognised differently and the form of recognition is dependant on the amount of the bequest written into the Will of the donor.

Additional information on gifts to the Permanent Fund can be found on the RI Website by clicking here and the latest Permanent Fund Financial Report can be found by clicking here.

Paul Harris Fellow (PHF) Recognition

A Club can request Paul Harris Fellow (PHF) recognition to honour either a Rotarian or non-Rotarian who, in its opinion, is worthy of this award. Clubs in RIBI have traditionally reserved this honour to mark their appreciation for service to Rotary but personal donations to The Rotary Foundation will also accumulate credit towards receiving the award.

A PHF Request Form (in Adobe .pdf format) can be downloaded by clicking here. A hard copy of the PHF Request Form can be obtained by contacting David Wilkinson.

Additional information and answers to frequently asked questions about the PHF recognition programme, including how an individual can receive Multiple Paul Harris Fellow recognition, can be viewed by clicking here.
