More than five years in the planning Friday 16th June2006
marks the completion of the very successful joint project between
the Rotary
Wheel Forest Trust, Life for a Life Memorial Forests and the Countryside
Service of Oldham MBC which has established the Largest Permanent Rotary
Wheel in the world at Tandle Hill Country Park, Royton, Oldham, Greater
Manchester. Begun in 2001 the project sought to mark the Centenary
of the Rotary movement in 2005. The aim was to build a Rotary Wheel
and plant around it a memorial forest with trees from Rotarians and
local people. All the trees on the site have now been planted and after
today around £14000 will have been given to charities, most of
them local.
The event will be marked by the laying down of a Time Capsule commemorating:
the Centenary of the Rotary movement (1905 – 2005), the names of
all those who have planted trees on the site, the history and development
of the project, and significant facts about Oldham, Royton and
the Tandle Hill Country Park. The Capsule will be buried under the
2-ton
stone ball at the centre of the wheel by the Governor of Rotary
District 1280 Graham Southern, who has been involved in and supportive
of
the project since its very earliest days. It will not be opened
until 99 years hence at the bicentenary of Rotary International The
afternoon
will conclude with the presentation of cheques for over £6000
to local and Rotary Charities.
A commemorative DVD which recounts the whole project from conception
to completion will be made available after the event for anyone (whether
they can attend or not), who wishes to have a worthwhile memento
of this innovative project.
Chairman of the Rotary Wheel Forest Trust Mel Farrar said, “We are
so pleased to see this through to completion, and grateful for
all the support we have received. What better way to welcome visitors
to the North West than the Rotary symbol of worldwide fellowship
and service. It has not been easy but this amazing project has
yielded
the Largest Permanent Rotary Wheel in the World, a beautiful memorial
forest, and significant funds for charities. It is rightly seen
as a wonderful example of partnership working between the Life for
a
Life® Charity, the Oldham Metropolitan Borough Council and
the Rotary movement, benefiting charities and the environment.
Where
Oldham leads others follow, and we are aware that more Rotary Districts
are now looking to develop similar sites near their own airports.”
Although this site is now full Rotarians can still plant trees on
other Life for a Life sites (there are 25 countrywide) and if they
mention Rotary then funds will come to the Trust to be directed to
Rotary Charities. Contact Mel for further details
