The primary aim for the Communications Committee in any year is
to support the Clubs in the District in their internal and external
communication. We aim to do this by being responsive to what
you need and it is therefore important to us to talk with you and
find out where we can help you. We fulfil our remit by producing
the District Magazine, the District Website, presentations and
technical support for the District Conference and support and advice
on Marketing and Public Relations. We also work closely with
the Training Committee, and can provide training related to electronic
communications, websites, public relations and presentation material
such as leaflets, posters or PowerPoint presentations.
Here are some thoughts from the committee members with specific
responsibilities.
John Kilshaw and Gordon Lowe produce “Rotary
Today”. John said in the latest issue that
his aim is “make it purely a district magazine”,
for the clubs in the District and about the Clubs in the District. He
is looking for reports on district and inter club sporting events
and news from the Clubs about what they are doing. These
will generally be between 100 and 150 words with one or two photos
attached. John also proposes to put in feature articles
about successful clubs in the district, they may be successful
in fellowship, recruitment or service – it doesn’t
matter. The important thing is to publicise what your
club does well, you never know others might learn from it. The
magazine can also offer free advertising for any of your Rotary
related events. Contact John or Gordon if you have copy
for the magazine or if you want advice on an article you want
to submit.
Clive Gardiner is the District Webmaster and
he says the site is “your window to the World of Rotary,
and the place to start for information. The District Website
holds a wealth of information on over 1,600 pages and links to
the whole world of Rotary”. From the site you can download
forms and guidance documents, get updated information on District
events, such as the Conference and reports on a whole variety of
Rotary projects. The District Calendar has just been upgraded
and now lists all District activities and the District Governor’s
diary, linked from the home page. The site undergoes continuous
development and this will continue alongside work to make electronic
communication easier, more reliable and less dependent on specific
software on your computer.
Carolyn Roberson is the District Marketing
and Public Relations Officer. She said “Together,
we hope we can make a positive contribution to District 1280
in:
- Supporting the DG and his priorities for the year
- Helping to provide the support and communication tools to advance
the image and modernisation of Rotary.
- Supporting clubs through visits, presentations, ideas, information
sharing and skills transfer.
- Working with other District committees so projects, people
and communications are “joined up”
Marketing is a growth area of Rotary communications and an area
where most Rotarians have little experience. Carolyn is a
marketing professional and I look forward to working with her and
learning from her over the course of the year.
Did you notice the symbol at the top of the page? It is
called CIRCLES (original isn’t it) and is the RI logo for COMMUNICATION,
PUBLIC RELATIONS and MEMBERSHIP.
This page will be updated regularly so keep coming back and look
out for communications related downloads.
