With plans for a launch of the RYLA in the District
being made for the Rotary year of 2010/11, the RYLA
management team has managed to negotiate a pilot course
to be run for 5 days starting 9th August 2009. This
exciting news will however need positive input from
clubs within the district, to ensure the full benefit
of a pilot. This will enable the scheme to be evaluated
and fine tuned for courses running from 2010 onwards.
So what is RLYA? It will enable Rotary to encourage
young people, with potential, to develop leadership skills
and help them realise their potential as future leaders
of our community. Whilst also encouraging those who may
require it, to exploit & develop their skills towards
leadership. During the week long course participants
will lead & be led, and will learn new skills within
a challenging environment that will enable them to face
their future with greater confidence. It will
include insight into – The
fundamentals of leadership; The ethics of positive
leadership; The importance of effective communication;
Problem solving & conflict
management; The building of self confidence; Elements
of community & global citizenship; and lastly and
by no means the least - What Rotary is & what it
does for the community.
The course is to be run at The Petty Pool Trust in
Northwich. The activity centre, known to summer
campers, that is situated in 40 acres of woodland. The
centre will provide activities such as Climbing & Abseiling;
Zip Wire; Crate Stakes; Canoeing; Jacobs Ladder & The
Leap of Faith, as the students take their own giant
leap to becoming leaders of the future.
The students should be of age 14yrs to 16yrs, and be prepared to stay at the
Petty Pool camp for 5 days. Clubs are invited to sponsor students at a
cost of £280. It is hoped to get at least 10 students available for
the pilot scheme starting 9th August 2009.
Applications for the 2009 RYLA Program are
available from district1280ryla@googlemail.com with
a final payment due by 23rd July 2009.
Bob Beeton, Chair of the District RYLA management team
said ‘Clubs must
realise the potential of running these courses, not only will it develop the
youth of today, but also it will provide potential membership for Rotary through
parents, teachers & mentors of the youngsters. There is also the potential
that these students will go on to form Interact / Rotoract Clubs thus becoming
the foundation for our Districts future. I urge clubs to fully get behind
the scheme remember the new Rotary motto “The Future of Rotary is in your
Hands" - a clear encouragement for the promotion of youth activities. |
